In the year 2154, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Delacourt, a government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn't stop the people of Earth from trying to get in by any means they can. When unlucky Max is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that, if successful, will not only save his life but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.
After seeing this, I would hire Neil Blomkampa director, but nota writer. He put a lot of pretty good work into building his world here, but in terms of structuring scenes, creating characters, and writing good dialogue, he failed pretty gloriously. I had actually gone into this movie with pretty high expectations, but after an hour I was considering stopping. Once I could see that the story was not in good hands, I lost interest.

The characters were annoying by and large, particularly Kruger. Matt Damon brought a good performancealways, but I am disappointed that he chose to attach himself to a script this bad. But his talent was wasted along with that of all of the well-known actors here. Even worse, there was very inconsistent conflict between them. The whole subplot of Carlyle's power struggle against Delacourt probably should have been left out because it bogged the plot down and didn't need to be there. I found that the movie was better to watch when nobody was talking. There was even a scene where Max was debating with his friends about how to get to Elysium where one of his friends urges Max to go to Elysium, and then a few seconds later is telling him not to because it will never work.

On top of that, the dystopian world that had been created felt like the most basic textbook dystopian society ever and was very forced. The way that the citizens of Elysium treated those on earth with disdain felt too extreme to be real and took me out of the movie whenever it came up. This mostly came up with Willam Fichtner's character John Carlyle. The revolution that ends up taking place at the end of the movie also didn't make that much sense. Yes, I understand that all of the people living on earth want those on Elysium to share their wealth, but the fashion in which they did this would probably just result in chaos instead of equality. I think it might have been better if the story had stuck more with Max helping Matilda and Frey get to Elysium.

The good action choreography made it tolerable to watch, but I didn't find that it was of a quality that sufficiently accounts for the cult following around Neil Blomkamp. I will admit that he has a talent for explosive action and cool set designs, but it was not enough to save the extremely lacking story of this movie. The action is good enough that I would recommend this to people who like explosive and futuristic action set pieces. To anyone else, I would advise that you find something else to watch. Overall Rating: 4.6/10.
My points are for the CGI alone, the rest of the film is too long and too confusing.

I have lots of issues with this movie, but I will not go on and on about them, I will just mention my main issue again, why is it so long? This film could have been done and dusted in 80 minutes, but no, it just goes on and on, which resulted in me getting bored and wondering why I bothered going to watch it.

Oblivion, which is kind of similar, is a masterpiece compared to this yawn fest. I see that in the reviews, people are 50/50 in their appreciation or condemnation of this film, I am in the latter camp.

It could have been so good, but I'm afraid the director spent to much time picking scenes where CGI could be incorporated. This detracts from what isn't a bad premise. Don't get me wrong, the CGI is excellent, its just that its over applied in many scenes.
With Elysium, the director proves that he still has one hand on the X-Box controller; maybe he should give the allegories a rest already and just get back in the game.
Former car thief Max da Costa (Matt Damon), now a parolee working for the Armadyne weapons factory in 2154 Los Angeles and recently exposed to a lethal dose of radiation bound to kill him in five days, agrees to steal "organic information" (e.g., bank codes and passwords) from the brain of Armadyne CEO John Carlyle (William Fichtner) in exchange for passage to Elysium, a man-made space station inhabited by Earth's elite, in hopes of gaining access to a Med-bay, a medical chamber capable of healing him. However, what beginsa desperate effort to save his life leads to something far greater. Elysium is based on a screenplay written by South African-Canadian filmmaker Neill Blomkamp. While Frey (Alice Braga) carries Matilda (Emma Tremblay) to the surface to find a Med-bay, Max and Spider (Wagner Moura) stay behind to locate the Elysium's computer core. In an attempt to stop them, Tucker (Sharlto Copley) pursues, but Max manages to kill him by hurling him over a ledge, still holding on to a grenade, which explodeshe falls. Spider breaks into the computer core and changes the computer program to read Earth's populationbeing "legal". As Spider prepares to download the "organic info" from Max's brain, he is warned that the download will be "lethal" to Max. Already knowing that, Max still agrees to the download. After contacting Frey for a final goodbye, Max pushes the button that starts the download and reboots the computer, killing himself in the process. President Patel (Faran Tahir) arrives with security robots, but they refuse to arrest Spider, who is now recognizeda citizen of Elysium. Meanwhile, Frey has found a Med-bay and uses it to heal Matilda, reversing her final stage lymphocytic leukemia in seconds. In the final scene, shuttles containing dozens of Med-bays arrive on Earth from Elysium to begin the process of healing the sick, causing Frey to look up and smile. Elysium spins, like a wheel, and the resulting centrifugal force creates artificial gravity on its inner edge. This keeps both its inhabitants and the atmosphere [not really, see entry above!] effectively pinned down to the surface. It's an old concept for a practical way to achieve artificial gravity in space.
